Trident One Delivers Top 2 in Decon Equipment

How did it all begin? When the Department of Homeland Security/National Institute of Standards and Technology S tandards Development Team (DHS/NIST) wanted more focused input on important decontamination equipment characteristics, they called the Decision Analysis Team from the nation's principal research and development center for non-medical chemical and biological defense the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC).

In order to obtain the information for the interagency mission with the DHS/NIST, the ECBC Decision Analysis Team (DAT) led a structured discussion of a functionally diverse group of first responders on the results of the initial survey, "First Responder Decon Equip Survey Report," (above referenced) in which the first responder community was asked to rank 10 characteristics of decontamination equipment in order of importance. Again, "the workshop participants agreed with the survey results that Time and Ease of Use are the most important of the 10 characteristics, but felt that the remaining characteristics are of equal importance (p.11, ECBC-SP-028)."

Find out more with the report resources below, or by reading the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC)special report, ECBC-SP-028 yourself.

Report Resources

Who were the first responder surveyed?

Naming names conflicts with almost all research and standardization processes, but providing descriptions of factors and variables involved is almost always expected. To help readers of special report ECBC-SP-028 better understand participation received from first responders across the United States, the report includes a descriptive list of workshop participants surveyed, as follows:

  • Illinois - Illinois State Police nuclear safety engineer who is also a fire fighter, hazmat team member, and EMT
  • Kentucky - Public health planner who is also a hazmat team member
  • Maryland - Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department fire chief and assistant chief
  • Harford County Emergency Operations Center hazmat team member
  • Michigan - Fire fighter with experience as a hazmat team member
  • Mississippi - County fire department preplanning officer with experience as a firefighter

Top 10-most important characteristics to Consider

(Based on the ECBC report (ECBC-SP-028) referenced document entitled "First Responder Decon Equip Survey Report" )

  • Time
  • Ease of Use
  • Reliability/Maintainability
  • Operating Conditions
  • Transportability
  • Consumable Resources Required
  • Human Factors
  • Interoperability
  • Power Requirements
  • Operational Interface

Note:

The ECBC-SP-028 report title, Decontamination Equipment Standards Workshop for Civilian First Responders, indicates a civilian-only application of the standards, however, the introduction of the report clearly states that the participants (all are HazMat professionals) "were chosen to ensure that the decontamination equipment standard created as a result of the workshop and survey would apply to the entire first responder community" (p.8, ECBC-SP-028).
